Science Centre, Maritime Museum & Boardwalk Fun

The Halifax waterfront offers one of the easiest and most enjoyable family day trips in Nova Scotia. With hands-on exhibits, historic ships, harbour views, and excellent food, it’s a lively and flexible outing that works well for visitors of all ages. Everything is located along the pedestrian boardwalk, making it easy to explore at your own pace.

Stop 1: Discovery Centre

The Discovery Centre is Atlantic Canada’s largest science centre, featuring multiple interactive galleries designed specifically to engage children and families. Its STEAM-focused exhibits bring science, technology, engineering, arts, and math to life through hands-on exploration. Kids can:

  • Build and test structures
  • Experiment with water and motion exhibits
  • Explore creative engineering challenges
  • Experience immersive shows in the dome theatre

It’s energetic, engaging, and highly interactive — a perfect way to start the day.

Stop 2: Walk the Waterfront

The Halifax waterfront boardwalk stretches along the harbour and is ideal for a relaxed family stroll. As you walk, you’ll find shops, public art, and excellent places to stop for lunch. This is one of the best places in Nova Scotia to enjoy a lobster roll, along with many casual, family-friendly options. Outdoor seating and harbour views make it easy to pause, eat, and enjoy the atmosphere. Be sure to stop at The Wave, a colourful sculptural landmark that children love climbing and playing on.

Stop 3: Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

A short walk along the boardwalk, the Maritime Museum introduces visitors to Nova Scotia’s deep connection to the sea. Historic vessels and harbourfront exhibits help bring maritime life into focus. The museum also includes a powerful exhibit about the Halifax Explosion of 1917, one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history. These displays help older children and adults understand the event and its lasting impact on the city.
Walking the docks and seeing real ships up close is a highlight for many families.
